What Hosting Companies Don't Tell You, Could Hurt You? Part 1 - Unlimited Space and Bandwidth

How to find a reliable shared hosting? Are the "Unlimited Disk Space" and "Unlimited bandwidth" features a catch? If you've reviewed or researched hosting companies you will notice they all look the same. They offer similar packages, but what they don't tell you is the type of disk space or bandwidth your website will be using.

The term "Unlimited" is not meant to be interpreted as "infinite" or "very large." "Unlimited" does not exist. Unlimited is nothing more than a marketing trick to attract buyers. In every such hosting there are acceptable use policies, which essentially say you cannot store files, stream videos etc... or any other resource intensive stuff. They also have CPU usage limits. So before you sign up with a hosting provider, do go to the hosting website, read the "Terms and Conditions" or "Terms of Service" or whatever the other names. Most hosts will not allow more than 25% CPU resource usage and 25 mysql connections within 90 seconds.

Some unlimited hosts are generally more overloaded, slower and unreliable.

Like everything in life you get what you pay for. In order to be profitable the hosting companies have to place a very large amount of clients on one server. The more accounts hosted on a server, the more revenue they can generate. Greed takes priority to a hosting company. Sure the plans they offer sound good, but do you really know what's going on behind the scenes? After they take your hard-earned money, what happens next?

They will limit your number of files and limit your bandwidth. The average website is less then 5GB in size and uses less than 25GB in bandwidth.

A server with 500 GB disk space and 2000 GB bandwidth costs about $100 per month on average. The cost of a simple support ticket is about $2. Do the maths, how much of unlimited top quality hosting can you get out of that?

To avoid the problems associated with overcrowded servers, do ask the hosting company some questions:

  • How many files are allowed in your account. The more files allowed means the server is less overcrowded
  • How much web space is allowed. More space assumes less user on the server.
  • What is the bandwidth limit? This will measure the CPU resource available for your account. If you use 500+ GB bandwidth, the hosting company may probably take you off a shared server immediately.
