Refill Instructions for Canon PG-245 Black Ink Cartridge
(Compatible with: Canon PIXMA iP2820, MG2420, MG2520, MG2522, MG2525, MG2920, MG2922, MG2924, MG3020, MG3029, MX490, MX492, TR4520, TS202, TS302, TS3120)

Instructions

  1. Put the cartridge on some paper towels in an area where you can tolerate a spill.
  2. Peel the top label off. You will see that the top of the cartridge has over 16 chambers in it and they are somewhat deep making the cartridge hold less ink than it could. The picture is the 245 standard size cartridge.
  3. Drill a hole into the cartridge.
  4. Fill the syringe with 10 ml of black ink, the 245XL can take 18 ml of ink.
  5. Stick the syringe needle into the drilled hole and at least half way down into the sponge.
  6. Very S-L-O-W-L-Y inject ink into the sponge until you see ink coming up.
  7. When finished, leave the label off or cut it short and put it back on being sure not to cover up the drilled hole. This will be the cartridge's vent hole.
  8. Replace the cartridge and run 1 - 3 cleaning cycles as per printer instructions.

For best results, leave cartridge in printer for 8 hours after refilling so the ink can saturate the entire sponge.

Note: Each time the cartridge is removed from the printer an "empty cartridge" message appears and a blinking amber light will come on, on the printer. Holding the paper feed (or stop/reset) button down for 3-5 sec. will allow you to override the counter.

As a side note you can see the top of the cartridge removed from a new unused cartridge in the picture to the right. Notice that Canon does not give you much ink in a new cartridge. When refilling you will be putting in more ink than the cartridge originally had. You also have the option of taking off the top of the cartridge and just saturate the entire sponge with ink and then put the top back on again.

How to Override the Low Ink Levels in a Canon Pixma

Inkjet cartridges

Canon makes a line of color all-in-one printers called Pixma, which have a P before the model number. For a variety of reasons, including using recycled or refilled ink cartridges, the printer will sometimes tell you that the ink is low even if it's not. If you want to override this message, you can do so within about 10 minutes depending on the problem. Keep going through the various troubleshooting options until something works.

Step 1

Turn the printer off, then on again. When the "low ink levels" message pops up on the LCD screen or your computer, click "OK" and move on. If you don't mind seeing this message, you can continue to do this whenever you restart the printer. You'll still be able to print as usual.

Step 2

Open the top of the printer via the handle on the front and locate the ink cartridges. Grip the front and back and pull straight up to remove any that the printer thinks are low. Look at the bottom for the rows of copper squares. Put a thin strip of tape on the top row and put it back in the printer. Close the lid, wait for the error message, and open it again. Remove the cartridge and add an additional piece of tape over the next row down. Then put it back in, close the lid, and wait for the error message. Remove the cartridge once more and take off the tape, then replace it. This essentially "tricks" the printer into thinking it's a new cartridge. Repeat with any other cartridges showing error messages.

Step 3

Remove the cartridges and rub the bottoms as well as the bottom of the ink tray with a paper towel dampened with rubbing alcohol. This will remove any clumps of dried ink that can block the ink from flowing or the cartridge from communicating with the printer.

Things You'll Need

  • Cellophane tape

  • Paper towel

  • Rubbing alcohol
